Microphone Permission
SMOG needs microphone access to transcribe your voice and enable voice features.
Steps to enable:
- 1. Open System Settings (or System Preferences on older macOS)
- 2. Go to Privacy & Security → Microphone
- 3. Find SMOG in the list and toggle it ON
- 4. If SMOG isn't listed, launch the app first to trigger the permission request
Accessibility Permission
Required for global keyboard shortcuts and reading text from other applications.
Steps to enable:
- 1. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility
- 2. Click the lock icon and enter your password
- 3. Click the "+" button to add an app
- 4. Navigate to Applications and select SMOG.app
- 5. Make sure the checkbox next to SMOG is checked ✓
Input Monitoring (macOS 13+)
Required on newer macOS versions to monitor keyboard input for shortcuts.
Steps to enable:
- 1. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Input Monitoring
- 2. Find SMOG in the list and toggle it ON
- 3. If not listed, restart SMOG and it should appear
- 4. You may need to restart your Mac for changes to take effect
Important Notes
- • You'll need to restart SMOG after granting permissions
- • Some features may not work until all permissions are granted
- • macOS may ask for permissions multiple times during first setup
- • If permissions are greyed out, make sure you've unlocked the settings with your password
Troubleshooting Permission Issues
Permission Request Doesn't Appear
- • Try manually adding SMOG in System Settings
- • Restart your Mac and launch SMOG again
- • Check if SMOG is quarantined: run
xattr -d com.apple.quarantine /Applications/SMOG.appin Terminal
Permissions Granted But Features Don't Work
- • Completely quit and restart SMOG
- • Remove and re-add SMOG from the permissions lists
- • Check if your Mac needs a restart for permission changes to take effect
- • Verify that all required permissions are granted, not just some
Permissions Set Up Successfully!
Once all permissions are granted, SMOG is ready to use. Test your microphone and shortcuts to make sure everything works.
