Questions we think you
might like answers to
Smog runs on macOS 14.2 or later.
Supported Macs:
- Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, M4…)
- Intel Macs — only if they can run macOS 14.2+
Support for Windows 10/11 (x64) is coming soon.
The Smog interface and all your content (messages, transcriptions, notes) are stored locally on your device.
- Smog does not upload or store your conversations on a server.
- We don’t keep a copy of your transcripts or notes in the cloud.
AI features use secure cloud models when you ask for help (summaries, answers, notes, etc.), but:
- Only the minimal text needed for the request is sent.
- Those requests are not saved on our side.
Smog comes with a few essential shortcuts you can customize:
- Quick Hide – instantly hide or show Smog.
- Push-to-Ask – hold to ask the AI a question on the fly.
- Start / Stop Listen – toggle live transcription.
- Toggle Vision – enable or disable screen analysis.
You can configure all shortcuts in Settings → Shortcuts.

If Smog doesn't hear anything (no transcript) or no questions appear, it's almost always caused by missing permissions on your device.
Smog needs access to your microphone and (optionally) screen recording to work properly. If those permissions were denied once, macOS won't ask again — you must enable them manually.
Follow our step-by-step permission guide here:
https://smog-ai.com/guide#permissions
The guide shows:
- How to re-enable the microphone for Smog
- How to enable screen recording (for Vision)
- What to do if Smog does not appear in the list
- How to reset permissions if needed
Once permissions are active, restart Smog and everything should work normally.
Smog processes audio, detects questions, and runs AI analysis in real time — but a few factors can slow things down.
Here are the most common causes and how to improve speed:
1. Your computer is running low on resources
Smog works best with a modern machine.
- Minimum: 8 GB RAM
- Recommended: 16 GB or more
- Close heavy apps or unused windows (Chrome tabs, video calls, editing tools…)
2. Camera + Smog running at the same time
Video calls already use CPU/GPU. Adding Smog on top can introduce a small delay — especially on older or low-RAM devices.
3. Your internet connection
If your connection is unstable or slow, AI responses may take longer. Try switching to a stronger Wi-Fi network or using ethernet.
4. Background apps using your microphone
Apps like Zoom noise suppression, Krisp, CleanVoice, etc. can add latency.
Tips to reduce delay:
- Close unnecessary apps
- Use a stable connection
- Restart Smog before an important meeting
- Check that no other app is processing audio first
With a clean environment and enough system resources, questions appear almost instantly.
